Salvation

Home Salvation

What is salvation (a summary)?

“Salvation”, “getting saved” or “becoming a Christian” mean one thing from God’s perspective:

The act of saving mankind from their sin – through the work of Jesus. The sin here means all the wrong which all men and women do, BY DEFAULT for they inherited this sinful nature at the beginning when Adam and Eve, our first parents rebelled against God (sin is rebellion) after being deceived by the enemy of God (Satan in the form of a serpent) in a spiritual war that had first broken out in heaven.

After the rebellion of man, because God is holy and just, a perfectly holy and just God had to then judge man and the punishment for sin is death. But God is also merciful. God knew that man on his own couldn’t pay for their own sins – so only he who was perfect could pay the penalty. He therefore needed to provide the solution to the problem of man’s rebellion and sin by sending his son Jesus as a saviour – but this plan to save people or a “redemption plan” took some time.

God’s final solution for sin

God’s solution for sin started when God gave people what is called “the Law” in a part of the bible called the “Old Testament”. This law introduced things like the “10 commandments”. This law was however only temporary – like a plaster or a bandage until God’s final solution came – at the right time or in the fullness of time. God’s final solution for sin was for God himself to come and save men himself (hence the concept of salvation) and he would do this by dying for their sin! The plan seemed so foolish – why would God come and die? The reason was because as explained, he is both Just (a righteous judge) and Merciful. Just – meaning he had to punish sin, merciful because man on his own couldn’t pay for their own sins – so only he who is perfect, that is God could pay the penalty for something as serious as sin. God thus sent Jesus as the solution – to come and die in our place. We were supposed to die for our sins, but he came instead.

About Jesus the saviour

Jesus was born to a human mother but he had no earthly father. Mary, his mother, a virgin became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit coming upon her. The bible tells it as follows:
“In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth. He had a message for a young woman promised in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of King David. Her name was Mary. The angel came to her and said, “Peace be with you! The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!” Mary was deeply troubled by the angel's message, and she wondered what his words meant. The angel said to her, “Don't be afraid, Mary; God has been gracious to you. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king, as his ancestor David was, and he will be the king of the descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end!” Mary said to the angel, “I am a virgin. How, then, can this be?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God's power will rest upon you. For this reason the holy child will be called the Son of God.” Luke 1: 26-35 (GNT).

About 30 years after his birth, Jesus was baptized by a prophet called John the Baptist (his cousin who had been sent ahead of him) and at his baptism, the Holy Spirit rested on him. Jesus then begun his about 3-year ministry whose core message was “Good News”: “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 3: 2).” He also explained the purpose of his ministry this way:

““The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people”” (Luke 4: 18-21).

Jesus was however killed by jealous people (pharisees and religious leaders) because of his miracles, healing and popularity, but those who killed him didn’t know that they were being used to fulfill the work of Satan who used those evil men and one of his closest followers (a man called Judas) to hand him over to the Roman government of the time and they killed him. Jesus however rose again (or resurrected) 3 days later and went to heaven. He was seen by over 500 witnesses and these witnesses became the first Christians who went about preaching the message – first that Jesus had come to the earth, as God but that he rose from the dead and so he was alive forever. They confirmed that they had seen him alive. These witnesses, helped by the Holy Spirit who they received after Jesus went to heaven then wrote down his works as well as other instructions in a part of the bible called the “New Testament”. Many of these witnesses themselves were however killed for preaching this truth. This is how many became “saints” or “martyrs” – they preferred to be killed than to deny what they knew to be true.

The message of salvation is this…

None of us is good for we have all sinned against a Holy God and for that we deserve death in everlasting fire (hell), for eternity - but God is just and has provided an escape - a redemption, his son Jesus who had to die - so you could live, if you believe in him (put your faith in him). He promises this salvation for everyone who believes his message. How shall you respond? Shall you respond to God’s call? Will you respond as those people who first heard the message of Jesus when it was first preached by Peter, one of Jesus’ friends and a witness:
“When the people heard this, they were deeply troubled and said to Peter and the other apostles, “What shall we do, brothers?” Peter said to them, “Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit. For God's promise was made to you and your children, and to all who are far away—all whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”” Acts 2: 37-39 (GNT). ‬‬

If this message speaks to you, if God is calling you, then you must do what the bible says:
  1. Repent of your sins (tell God you are sorry).
  2. Be baptized in the name of Jesus. If you do, you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

If you want to understand more about this and what you can do after that, then write to us and we can help you: info@ourtestimony.org include: “Just saved” in the subject line.

Amen!
