Have we missed the mark in worship?

When Jesus was asked which was the greatest commandment, He, of course, being the exact representation of God, the I AM who had appeared to Moses and given the Israelites the 10 commandments, He knew what the Old Testament Law’s true intent was. He therefore summarized them in a way that can help you understand true worship: to love the Lord with all your heart (taken from Deuteronomy: 6:5) and to love your neighbour as yourself (from Leviticus 9:18).  But what exactly does it mean to worship God – in “Spirit and truth” so that this love is made manifest? By comparison, what do we do today that makes us miss the mark in worship?

The first thing is our limited view of what “worship” is. The Holy Spirit moved the Apostle Paul to write this: “In gratitude for all that God has done for you, by the sacrifice of Jesus on your behalf, offer your body as ‘a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12: 1-3 (NIV).

So offering your body or your entire life as a “living sacrifice” to God is true worship, and that’s what’s pleasing to him – meaning God loves it because it shows that you love him with “all your heart, soul and mind and strength.”  Many in the Church today have missed the mark because they don’t understand that this worship can be expressed in various ways, not just slow music, and it includes:

  1. Don’t just pray (words); treat others fairly (action). “No matter how much you pray, I will not listen, for your hands are covered with blood. Wash yourselves clean. Stop all this evil that I see you doing.” Isaiah 1: 15-16 (GNT).
  2. Use physical action, such as kneeling.  One of the words used for worship is proskuneo, which means to bow down to gods or kings. When did you last bow down or kneel while praying to your Lord and King? Many forget that God is a King. Yes, he is our father and friend, but he is also a GREAT King, so bow, kneel, and fall on your face (prostrate) in prayer! He will not ignore your prayers when you turn to him in humility. “Come, let us bow down and worship him; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! He is our God; we are the people he cares for, the flock for which he provides. Listen today to what he says:” Psalms 95: 6-7 (GNT).
  3. Sing loudly! Praise God with shouts of joy, all people! Sing to the glory of his name; offer him glorious praise! Psalm 66: 1 -2 (GNT).  Many of us think worship to God is only quiet songs in the tradition of hymns. There is time for silence or quiet singing, but there is also room for LOUD songs. Did you know Heaven is extremely noisy with joy? When did you last watch a soccer match of your favorite team and were quiet when a goal was scored? If you can shout for men, who are flesh and blood, what about the King who gives you life itself?
  4. Giving to poor people is worship (surprise, surprise). “If you oppress poor people, you insult the God who made them; but kindness shown to the poor is an act of worship.” Prov 14: 31 (GNT). Are you giving to the poor or keeping it all to yourself?
