Part 9: Conclusion. Be holy for IAM holy.

The beauty of holiness

The Lord from the start has expected his people to be a separate community, holy unto him and when he first told the Israelites “Be holy for IAM holy” it was in the midst of many rules of “do this” and “don’t do this!”

Like our early brothers in the faith, today we are in the world but not of the world (John 17:14-15) and so since we are made in God’s image, as he is the light of the world, so are we - so we shine holy lives onto others.

Someone might however think with these series when I said “don’t say this”, “don’t listen to this,” “don’t go here etc” it makes holy living boring. Where is the fun? Someone might wonder!

Many don’t know the “beauty of holiness”.

Imagine you are a child who never brushes their teeth, never goes to bed on time, never does the homework, always has a dirty uniform from playing in the wrong places.

You will likely always think your parents are monsters and fail to see the other side of them, perhaps that they are kind and funny.

Learning to walk in holiness is supposed to give you freedom!

It allows you to have the freedom to live a life of friendship with God and of getting to know him intimately.

I for example found out God is really funny. This came not through inference - for example you see a funny looking creature in nature and laugh or know a funny comedian and infer that God is funny because he made funny creations.

No, I got to know God’s funny side by revelation and many times when I’m reading my Bible I actually laugh!

One example I can share is this:

One time I was in earnest prayer. I was praying about the armour of God (see Ephesians 6). I was saying something like: “Give me the helmet of salvation, the breast plate of righteousness, the belt of truth..”

The Lord interrupted me and told me: “I know the armour..”

I stopped and burst out laughing in the middle of the prayer. I laughed because of way he said it to me. It was like he was saying: “Duh.. I wrote the book.”

As I have mentioned, holy living allows you many freedoms. For example:

·         It’s cheaper. Living a holy life saves you so many expenses. Buying all those rounds of tequila and beer in the bar? Going for a clandestine mission with your “side dish” or “friend with benefits” to a lodge or motel? Repairing your car because of a ditch you landed in while driving home drunk at 3 am when no one is innocent? A holy life where you don’t spend on certain costs means you therefore start experiencing the freedom that having extra money offers - you can for example give more to your favourite charities.

·         It gives you peace of mind. Imagine you are a corrupt government officer, in a certain corrupt country. You might often live in fear. What if the regime falls and the new government comes after you to take you to prison for embezzlement? Holy living allows you to fear God and obey his “do not steal” command thus you have the freedom to sleep at peace in the night without any worries!

·         It enhances your relationships. Imagine being with your spouse and never having to worry if they will secretly look at your phone and find a flirtatious message with a work mate or worse, a communication about a secret child they didn’t know about. Holiness teaches you to remain faithful sexually and to be trustworthy, without lies. Without these worries, you have the freedom to enjoy getting to know your spouse, in mutual faith, hope and love. Holy living allows you the freedom to experience the maximum love you can with others, without the limiting factors of hidden secrets and the fears of being found out.

All this freedom in the Lord as you can see allows you to live freely in the beautiful garden of Eden which God has given you and you can exclaim as follows:

“The boundary lines have fallen for me in beautiful places.” Psalms 16:6.

When God says: “be holy for IAM holy,” it is not a warning to stay away from him, it’s an invitation to come closer  to him, to experience a friendship with him that he can only extend to an equal, that is another holy being.

This is the kind of friendship that allows him to talk with you in the secret place and tease you, to tell you about the secret strengths you never knew, to comfort you in your down days, to dream with you about what your mansion in heaven will look like, to make secret plans with you on who you will bless financially and leave screaming with joy. All these things, which Jesus talked about: “I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10), you can experience, when you put off sin that so easily entangles and run the race (of holiness) set before you (Heb 12:1).

Will you covenant to start living a holy life?

Lots of love,

Your brother in the Lord and a servant of the Holy God, the High and Lofty one.
