The final solution (Jesus' appearance on this earth)

The end of the Old Covenant

When you open your Bible, the last book of the Old Testament is called Malachi. Then the first book of the New Testament is called Matthew. Between these two books is a period of about 400 “silent years.” These years are called silent because there was no prophet speaking. Without a prophet, the people did not hear the voice of God. People during these silent years asked themselves: “Where is God?”  Where is his promised Messiah?”

It is after these 400 years of waiting that a man called John the Baptist finally BURST onto the scene! It is why if you read the New Testament, it says that “the hearts of all Israel were expectant (Luke 3:15).” They had been waiting for 400 years and so they thought John was the Messiah promised!

John himself however said he was not the main act; he was simply a forerunner – someone who runs in front of a king’s chariot. He was sent to prepare people for God’s solution that was finally ready and that is why one of the Gospels summarizes the role of John and Jesus as follows:

“This is the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It began as the prophet Isaiah had written: “God said, ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.’ Someone is shouting in the desert, ‘Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!’” So John appeared in the desert, baptizing and preaching. “Turn away from your sins and be baptized,” he told the people, “and God will forgive your sins.”” Mark 1: 1-4.

Why was Jesus both the “Son of God” and “son of Man?”

It is important to understand why Jesus is called the “son of God” and yet also the “son of man” for these are words used interchangeably in the Gospels (which means “Good News”) about Jesus.

Jesus was born to a human mother, but he had no earthly father. Mary, his mother, a virgin became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit (the 3rd member of the triune God) and hence the phrase “immaculate conception”.  Thus, Jesus was born and was known by various names - Immanuel (God with us), The Christ - the promised messiah (saviour) and Son of David. Jesus however preferred to refer to himself as “Son of Man” - Son of man being the title of a man given power by God to rule the nations forever according to a prophesy in Daniel 7: 13-14.

Jesus’ mission impossible.

About 30 years after his birth, Jesus was baptised by a prophet called John the Baptist (his second cousin who had been sent ahead of him as mentioned above) and at his baptism, the Holy Spirit rested on him, confirming that he was “God’s Son” in whom God was pleased.

Jesus then begun his journey about 3-years’ ministry and his core message was “Good News” and it was similar to that which had been preached by John: “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

What was Jesus’ mission impossible when he came to this earth? How can you summarize it if you were asked?

To be continued.

Your brother in the Lord and a servant of Jesus.
