How God secretly planned Jesus' death

The death of the promised saviour

Jesus died according to God’s secret plan. If the devil had known this, he would not have killed Jesus, but God in his wisdom, hid this plan from plain sight, right from the beginning. In the beginning when Satan thought he had defeated God by introducing sin into the world through Adam and Eve, God announced his secret plan of salvation, He said:

And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.” Genesis 3: 15.

Jesus’ purpose in coming to earth was therefore to CRUSH or BRUISE the head of the serpent and in so doing, his own heel would be bruised – this was prophetic language to speak of Jesus’ death, right from the beginning! Why did God keep this plan a secret from Satan? He wanted to shame Satan, he wanted to make a spectacle of him and his minions (Colossians 2: 15) – to show that God in his infinite wisdom can take the things others call foolish – such as the death of a GOD and turn it into a victory!

Therefore, right from the start, Jesus came to die - to be the perfect sacrifice (and so fulfil the Old Covenant) for sin. It was absolutely necessary for him to die - but then resurrect. After his death and resurrection, His disciple Peter explained it as follows in a sermon to many people in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost:

““Listen to these words, fellow Israelites! Jesus of Nazareth was a man whose divine authority was clearly proven to you by all the miracles and wonders which God performed through him. You yourselves know this, for it happened here among you.

In accordance with his own plan God had already decided that Jesus would be handed over to you; and you killed him by letting sinful men crucify him. But God raised him from death, setting him free from its power, because it was impossible that death should hold him prisoner.

For David said about him, ‘I saw the Lord before me at all times; he is near me, and I will not be troubled. And so, I am filled with gladness, and my words are full of joy.

And I, mortal though I am, will rest assured in hope, because you will not abandon me in the world of the dead; you will not allow your faithful servant to rot in the grave.” Acts 2: 22-27.

The new covenant..

Jesus had promised his disciple Peter (the one who gave the sermon above) that:

“Upon this rock, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. Matthew 16:18.

This started happening in full force after the disciples received the Holy Spirit (day of Pentecost) and this church grew and multiplied, and it is during this period of growth that Jesus’ disciples and early followers wrote down the things he had taught them and supplemented them with teachings (often letters to churches set up or early believers) to clarify his message.

These letters (to early churches or believers) eventually became what is called the “New Testament” as they covered the New Covenant of Jesus (or God) with man for the redemption of sin as represented by his body and his blood. This covenant is celebrated by what is called “Holy Communion.

How was Jesus’ life and death the solution to the problem of sin? How does this explain the message of salvation?

To be continued.

Your brother in the Lord and a servant of Jesus.
