He must increase but I must decrease

I learnt a long time ago that you cannot receive the word of God unless you receive it with meekness - which is humility and when you do, then this word (the Bible) will be implanted by the Lord into your heart and that is how you will bear fruit.

I testify with those that testify, that I have personally striven to live according to this word:

"He must increase, but I must decrease. He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all." John 3:30-31 KJV

These are the words that John the Baptist spoke when people came to tell him that Jesus was surpassing him in his ministry - meaning more people were getting baptized in Jesus' ministry than his.  John did not get offended that his Lord was increasing. Instead he rejoiced in humility for after all the work of God was continuing. Why compete with another man's ministry if we belong to the same family?

May my God who is the judge of all human hearts shine a light into your own heart that he will show you any pride and remove it, that he will teach you his ways - the ways of humility that you may bear much fruit. For this to happen - you must decrease while Christ must increase.

Increase in us oh Lord, let our flesh get out of the way!

In Jesus' name I have prayed. Amen!

  • He must increase but I must decrease
  • Being alert and sober
