Part 4: The things that we listen to (music, conversations).

Please note: This message of the series is one of the most important revelations the Lord has given me in these series, so please pay attention for chains will break because of this message.

Houstonfornication

You likely already know that certain music is just bad for a Christian but by sharing my experience and revelations from the Lord, I am hoping this will get you paying more attention to the things you listen to, for what you take in - through what you hear (input), significantly impacts what comes out of your heart in the things you say and then eventually do (output).

Jesus gave a stinging rebuke and explained this when he said:

“You brood of vipers, how can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” Matthew 12:34 AMP

As an example, there is a song called “Houstonfornication” by an artist called Travis Scott, it is a play on two words “Houston” (his home city) and “fornication” (the temptations he faces in Houston).

Now imagine you listened to this song on repeat x 10. What do you think you will soon start thinking and then eventually start doing?

First, you might start thinking that it is actually okay to cheat on your spouse for: “hey, a little something on the side never hurt anybody right? You need to blow the steam, ventilate a little right?”

Next, these thoughts will turn into action - finding a “side dish,” “side N***” “Netflix and chill buddy” “friends with benefits” and the other euphemisms for fornication.

Bible principles

About songs and their lyrics - many of which are dangerous, the Bible addresses them and the impact they will have on your daily holiness as follows:

“Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.”

2 Timothy 2:16 NIV

What this verse is telling you, is that songs (which are a form of conversation or talk) especially those that promote sin and other godlessness have one result: They cause you to become more ungodly - or put another way, you become more and more unholy (for that’s God characteristic) the more you listen to them.

The same applies to the conversations you take part in, or listen to.

Many of us for example have “god mocker” friends, who we should minimise time with and then many of us are on WhatsApp groups (a form of hearing) which frankly we should not be on - the content is X-rated, the language is vile and there is no fear of God there.

Spending time in such an environment will eventually cause you to start “minimising God” or you no longer hold him in reverence, esteem and respect but start to belittle or despise him - forgetting that he is a GREAT KING (Malachi 1:14) with millions upon millions of angels ministering to him (Daniel 7:10).

Cooling effect of music on the Holy Spirit

One other thing the Lord has showed me is that the things we listen to, such as certain songs have the effect of cooling or quenching the fire of the Holy Spirit.

As example, someone once told me this story about music and her.

In the gym while say on the treadmill, she liked to listen to upbeat music - so she started listening to catchy Nigerian songs.

Then the Holy Spirt turned up, he showed her that every time she listens to such songs (even if the lyrics are not necessarily bad) it had the effect of literally cooling her “fire” or zeal for God. It partly explained why she would be on fire for God for one month and then lose her steam by the next. (The other reason she often loses zeal is she does not read the Bible regularly).

I have noticed the same “cooling down” effect in my own life when I listen to non-Christian music!

Now this is incredibly important.

Many of us, often wonder why we do not for example want to read our Bibles or go to church or do God related matters. We cannot seem to make the connection between music and our love for God. The Lord is helping me reveal this to you!

Many might argue and say that: “BUT not all music I listen to is bad!” The Lord however says about such:

“All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].”

1 Corinthians 10:23 AMP

Spiritual maturity over the years has taught me that yes, sure some music is not “bad” but in reality, it’s not beneficial and the same goes with the conversations we hold, are all of them beneficial?

Practical tips

So, what practical tips can I share on this topic of what we listen to?

#1. Sieve the music you listen to, sieve the conversations you take part in, including chat groups online. This might mean for example creating a playlist of specific music you listen to or only joining certain groups.

Always ask yourself: Are these all beneficial for my spiritual growth? If not, perhaps you should cut them out, remember to be holy is to be separate - must you be in a certain WhatsApp group, even if you don’t participate?

#2. Every time you hear a song and it catches your attention, try googling its lyrics. You will be surprised at how many of the songs we love fit within the “godless chatter” category. By now you should know what I will say, if it’s not beneficial - CUT IT OUT!

If I could give up my “DJ Wickie Dickie on the mic” days and give up my 1,000s of songs with words like “Californication “all for the sake of the Kingdom, what about you? Are you willing to be an outcast for the sake of Christ?

By the way as a final revelation on music, I once had a dream (God really speaks to his prophets in dreams) about one of this world’s biggest stars, they call her a “Queen.” I saw her at the end of time and the angels of God were taking her away to destruction and she cried that “I didn’t know”!

Perhaps she is being influenced by a demon/spirit she knows not of? She has been accused of performing satanic rituals at some of her shows and there are claims that a demon possesses her and then she becomes “fierce” and extremely sexually provocative, when normally she is calm! Sigh, music can be dangerous, so be careful holy saint!!

To be continued…

Till next time.

Lots of love – your brother in the Lord and a servant of the Lord Jesus.
