Part 6: the places we go to and people we hang out with.

A strong message from the Holy Spirit

In one of the strongest messages from the Holy Spirit about the people we hang out with - that is, the company we keep, the Bible says this:

“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.”

1 Corinthians 5:9-11 NIV

First, do you realise that the scripture above is making it clear that Christians SHOULD NOT be - sexually immoral (no “Netflix and Chill”), greedy, idolatrous, alcoholics (“Party animals”) or thieves/swindlers (“Where is my percent?”).

Second, that Christians should keep company with only fellow holy Christians AND NOT those who claim to be Christians but by their fruit show they are children of the devil.

Third, the scripture is showing that people of this world do evil things by nature and for example go for “PARTE AFTER PARTE AFTER PARTE!” It is expected for them to “mush up the place” and so since we cannot get away from them, it’s okay to “associate with them” - which means occasionally spending time with them BUT we shouldn’t as a habit be partying with them.

If you want to measure yourself on how you are doing on this point, take a mini survey of the top 3 people you spend the most time with. Are they Christians who are walking in holiness before God? If they are not, then you need to start re-evaluating your company. Why?

The Bible says this:

“Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.”

1 Corinthians 15:33-34 NIV

This is also strong language meaning some Christians deceive themselves to think they can keep company with sinners and remain standing in holiness, NO that will not happen - no wonder the Spirit speaking through Paul says: “come back to your senses!”

The places you go to, like the company you keep can provide a quick indicator of whether you are headed for trouble, so again quick survey, list out the top 3 places you go to, in your free time. Are these places reflective of the places a Christian should hang out in?

The company you keep (friends) and the places you go to, will greatly shape whether you CONSISTENTLY live a holy life and CONTINUE to do so, until our Lord returns or you are taken from this tent of a body.

Do you for example realise that even if Jesus spent time with prostitutes, tax collectors and other sinners, his closest friends (the company he kept) ALL had similar beliefs as him?

Think of his inner circle of 3 - Peter, James, and John. All three were devout believers and indeed these were even the ones with him at his lowest in the garden of Gethsemane.

Who is with you in your lowest moment? That is an indicator of your closest company.

Likewise, when the Lord sent out disciples to preach, he sent them two by two (Luke 9:1-2). He was showing us the principle of keeping company/friendships with other believers.

Who do you go to different places with? Who is your sightseeing buddy for example?

Finally, after Jesus was raised, in the Acts of the Apostles, we see the apostles always keeping company with one another and so for example Peter hang out with John, Paul hang out with Barnabas and later Silas as well as Timothy and the godly couple of Priscilla and Aquila among other believers.

Who holds your biggest secrets? Are these fellow believers?

Then as a bonus point, you have Bible verses saying Christians should only marry fellow Christians and not be yoked (walking in the same direction) with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14).

All these verses are showing clearly that your company is very critical for holy living.

Christian, how are you doing in these areas? If not so well, here are some tips:

Practical tips

#1. When I first got saved, I didn’t really have many Christian or “savdee” friends in the UK, so I had to cultivate new friendships. I started by going for regular coffee/lunch with the pastor.

I also joined ministries at church - for example a prayer group and a “cell group”. Through these, I found new friends, some of whom are now my closest friends. Do the same, imitate me as I imitate Christ.

#2. Thank God I also married a god-fearing spouse, now that was a good ninja move! I therefore urge you, if you are unmarried, don’t marry a non-believer. I urge you to find godly friends to start keeping company with, and then hopefully one of these will become your spouse.

#3. Then, this is a difficult one - start cutting out the people who claim to be Christians but DON’T walk in holiness. Keep them at a distance. If you are the one who has been acting sinfully while claiming to be a brother/sister - repent! Connected to this, start cutting out going to certain places if they are just leading you further from God.

Meanwhile, did you notice that one of the first tests of holiness in the scripture I shared of 1 Corinthians 11: 5-9 was about keeping away from a brother/sister who was sexually immoral? This topic of sexual immorality is quite a big deal to God right?

Well, it is coming up in the next 2 parts!

To be continued…

Till next time.

Lots of love – your brother in the Lord and a servant of the Lord Jesus.
