God, I am suffering; where are you??!

God, I am suffering; where are you??!

No one typically likes to suffer, except for a very specific category of people who derive pleasure from it. Unfortunately, suffering is part of the human experience. There are, however, different categories of suffering that a person should be aware of to ensure they don’t miss the mark.

Category 1: As a result of breaking natural laws (“cause and effect”).  Many of us suffer because we have broken natural laws. For example, we sin sexually and catch STDs, or we steal (corruption) and, eventually, are put in prison. This is not God’s fault, is it? Jesus, however, provided us with a model for how to deal with this: “I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” (Matthew 25:36) So be compassionate to those suffering, even if it is through their own mistakes, just as Jesus told us.

Category 2: As a direct result of being a Christian (“persecution”). Much as God didn’t create suffering as many people accuse him (see Category 3 below), God has repurposed suffering as a “purifying fire” to discipline those he loves. As an example, Jesus, the perfect lamb of God, never harmed anyone, yet he was persecuted by both men and demons.  How did Jesus deal with his own suffering? Just before his death, when overcome by extreme grief, he prayed for 3 things we can learn (Mark 14: 32 – 34): 1. Everything is possible with you, God; 2. Please take away this cup of suffering.3. If you won’t take it away and instead it is your will that I go through it, here I am, I am your servant. This is the humility that God loves – when we accept that He is God and will make all things good in His (not our) time.

Category 3: Suffering for which there appears to be no clear, explainable reason or cause. This is the most difficult one for which both Christians and non-Christians struggle. Many people who reject God and his Christ often use the topic of suffering as their “weapon.” They ask questions such as: “Where is God when children are being aborted?” “How could a good God let innocent people be killed?” Finding no satisfactory answer in their view, they conclude that either God doesn’t exist, or if he exists, he is not as good as he claims to be – thus, they miss the mark for not knowing history or they have been deceived by an enemy. It is not God who brought suffering!

In the beginning, the world God created was good, and the people he created were VERY good. The suffering we see came because an enemy, Satan, lied to the 1st parents we had, Adam and Eve. Because God is also just, those who sin must die, so the consequences are with us, including creation itself being cursed (hence earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, etc), even when many of us are innocent.  So then – where is God when we are suffering and can’t understand why?  It’s best to hear him explain things himself, then you can conclude as you wish: “When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept.” (John 11: 33 – 35, NIV).  Thus, this God they claim is not good is actually right beside us - weeping, healing, raising.
