When your best doesn't please God

The Bible has a pretty "disturbing" story in 1 Chronicles 13. King David is working really hard to bring the Ark of God to Jerusalem - he does all this work, spends all this money, works with all his might and the day ended in disaster! This is what the Bible records:

David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who is enthroned between the cherubim - the ark that is called by the Name.

They moved the ark of God from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets.

When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God. Then David was angry because the Lord's wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah. David was afraid of God that day and asked, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?" 1 Chronicles 13: 6-12 (NIV).

A day that was supposed to be in honour of a good thing - honouring God, instead ends with God getting angry and someone dying! Isn't God patient and merciful and kind? Why would he kill somebody?

Why would God kill someone? This kind of story makes people say God is angry.

I have come to learn from this that God has made it clear - those who approach him, must acknowledge that he is holy, he is separate, he is majestic - just because he is our father, does not mean we should just "Budge in".

The Baganda (the predominant tribe of Uganda), have a phrase: "kumanyira" - it is loosely translated as being "overly familiar" with someone - this story is one of those that taught me that correct I can go to God anytime because he is my father - BUT I shouldn't over "kumanyira" him - for he is a great king and the creator of the universe.

Just because I'm doing something for him, doesn't mean I can just ignore his protocols.

This is the same mistake Cain made - he thought that just because he brought a sacrifice, God would accept it. No thanks!
