Fulfilling all that God requires

Introduction

When God sent the man called "John the Baptist" to preach, John announced in his ministry that everyone should: "Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near." When someone came to him, they acknowledged that they were sinners and were ready to leave that life behind. He would then baptize them in the Jordan River.   Then something strange happened: Jesus came to be baptized!

This was strange because God had told John that "Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit," which meant Jesus had no sin and did not need to be baptized. Yet when John wondered why Jesus was there, the Bible records Jesus' reply to John this way:  But Jesus said, "It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires." So John agreed to baptize him. Matthew 3: 15 (NLT).

Another version says that Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. Matthew 3: 15 (NIV).

Many Christians today, even the devoted ones, have missed the mark of Christ, meaning we only do SOME of the righteous requirements of God and forget the blessing that comes from doing all.  Some examples are this:

  1. Baptism. Have you been baptized? If the son of God, who didn't have any sin, was baptized, how about you after you have become saved? Have you gone to be baptized to fulfill all righteousness? Child baptism doesn't cut it because children can't confess their sins.  Baptism was so important to the Lord Jesus that one of the last commands he gave to his disciples before he left this earth was this: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28: 19 (NIV).
  2. Letting go of old sins. After becoming saved, many Christians miss the mark when they continue in their old ways, yet the Bible says this: "Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of GodDo not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.  And that is what some of you were..." 1 Corinthians 6: 9 – 11 (NIV).

This scripture shows that someone did the sins mentioned above in their old life, but they should not do those things in the new life of Christ. If they do, they will have missed the mark-they will not inherit the Kingdom of God, even if they get saved. Yet many prophets lie to Christians that they don't need to change their lifestyle-after all, they have confessed Christ. This is a lie; don't miss the mark.

May the Lord Jesus keep you walking in the newness of Christian life. Lord Jesus, come - Maranatha!
