Practicing Daily - the Fear of God

Introduction

In a previous message, "Fearing your Heavenly Father," I explained that many Christians today have missed the mark of Christ. Some of our prophets have only taught us that God is a God of "love and grace," which he is. Still, they have not told us that God is also a consuming fire or that he is both kind and severe. So, we have missed the mark - meaning today we take God to be someone like, say, "Father Christmas" or "Santa Claus" – a jolly fat man who says "Ho, Ho Ho" and brings us gifts YET the angels in God's presence DO NOT STOP CRYING DAY AND NIGHT: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." When the Prophet Isaiah saw this vision of God, he was so terrified that he cried: "Woe to me!" I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty."  (See Isaiah 6: 1-5).

This understanding of God as a Father, full of love but also one to fear, will keep you safe in your daily life as you practice Christianity. Here are some examples that can help.

  1. In Giving. When we give God money, time, and talent, we are not doing God a "favor" - "Oh poor God of Love, he is begging for my love, so let me give him some money." No! That is missing the mark! Instead, you should fear the Holy One, for it is God who enables you and I to have wealth, and he can just as quickly take away what he gave us so generously. In fact, he boldly declares: I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains and the insects in the fields are mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you for the world is mine, and all that is in it. Psalms 50: 9-12 (NIV).
  2. In prayer. We should start our prayers in the same style Jesus taught us - by recognizing our Heavenly Father as Holy. In our prayers, we should worship and praise Him in awe - which is holy fear, just like the Holy Angels do. I often begin my prayers by declaring who He is, for example, "Holy, Holy, Holy. Heaven and Earth are full of your Glory." Oh Lord my God, may your name be glorified in my life.
  3. In how we take Bible reading.  A certain woman encountered Jesus, but a veil or blindfold was on her eyes, and she didn't recognize him for who he was - life itself. So, to help her, he told her: "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." John 4: 10 (NIV).

Many of us today, however, have missed the mark because the Bible is so readily available. It is free online, an app on our phones, and we can find it easily-perhaps just like water. Because it is so readily available, we take it for granted. A fear of God will make you respect him, and you will never go a day without reading your Bible.

May you not miss the mark of Christ. Lord Jesus, Come - Maranatha!
