Why you need to start/continue fasting

Fasting (willingly going without food for a period of time) is one of 3 key spiritual disciplines Jesus told his disciples to do using "When" not "If", meaning it was not just a good to have option. He expected it to be part of "business as usual" for his followers when he addressed fasting (together with giving and praying) as follows: "…And when you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting…  (Matthew 6: 16).

Unfortunately fasting seems to have fallen out of fashion, due to our modern day hedonistic culture where pleasure appears to be the highest good and to deny oneself food appears to be "punishment" but it was not always so. Throughout the bible, people have fasted for various reasons, for example to seek God's face when they sinned after he has passed judgment, to receive direction from the Lord/special revelation and to receive spiritual power.

This means that a Christian who is not fasting is missing the mark as they will lack spiritual power, lack special revelation or be unable to receive certain grace to repent etc.  Wouldn’t you wish to thus fast?

The 1st time I fasted for 3 days on water only, it was from a direct command of the Lord so he could free me from some strongholds of sin, after I had just gotten saved. This fasting therefore enabled the Lord to break the power of Satan over me in certain areas. This means many Christians today are held in bondage as slaves because they are not fasting!

I must however warn you, the first time you fast may be extremely difficult. During that initial fast for example on Day 1 I had a massive headache virtually all day (I later found out this was due to withdrawal symptoms from all the sugar). I couldn't even pray effectively, the hunger was intense. In light of this, If you want to successfully fast, some of the tips that can help you include:

  1. Develop a goal/objective for the fast. Is for direction? Power? Repentance? Revelation?
  2. During the fast, develop extended time to spend with God so you can hear him.
  3. Restrict physical exercise so you can conserve your energy.
  4. Expect discomforts - for example mental discomforts (e.g. crankiness, impatience) and physical discomforts (e.g. headache, dizziness, sleeplessness, bad breath, fatigue).

Given this "pain" and discomfort" I found that besides the benefit of weight loss, there is a surprise benefit of fasting beside the original objective you set. Fasting enables you develop self-control (one of the fruits of the Spirit). You will be surprised at how the ability to control the desire for food seems to be a gateway which leads to control over a whole range of other "things of the flesh" you may have been struggling over - anger/rage, lust and sexual immorality, drunkenness, evil thoughts et al.

May the Lord help you as you strengthen yourself through this ancient but critical discipline.
