Praying the kind of prayers that God loves

Introduction

As I shared in a previous message, modern Christians have forgotten how to pray, so their prayers often "miss the mark." This message provides additional insights, but first, let's return to the basics.  What is the mystery of prayer?

At its most basic, prayer is the Christian talking with God - i.e., speaking to and hearing from him.  It is one of 3 key spiritual disciplines Jesus told his disciples to do using "When," not "If," meaning he expected it to be part of "business as usual." He said: "When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites..." (Matthew 6: 7)

When I first got saved, my prayers were TOO DULL, TOO BORING. I couldn't stay awake for more than 15 minutes.  In desperation, I cried to the Lord, and I immediately heard his voice; he said 1 word: "Psalms!" This was the beginning of my delivery from boring prayers.  So here are some prayer tips I have learned from God to ensure you too, no longer miss the mark.

  • Use Psalms to learn how to pray.  The Psalms, written primarily by King David, are the prayer book of the Bible. David, the man "after God's own heart," prayed prayers that God LOVED, so God gave us a model by having David write down his prayers. That makes it easy for you then - simply learn to pray using the Psalms! Consider reading a psalm (or part of it) daily during your quiet time. In reading the Psalms, I, for example, learned to put prayer into perspective – you are praying to a Holy God. Praise him, Bless him, Worship him. Our prayers today miss the mark because they often don't incorporate this element. Do you realize when Jesus taught us to pray, the Lord's Prayer with Praise/Worship? It is: "Our Father in Heaven, Hallowed be your name..."
  • Maintain a prayer journal. If God exists and he answers prayers, you must be "crazy" enough and bold enough to keep records of your prayers so you have proof that He answers prayers. Maintaining a prayer journal that lists what you are praying for (e.g., situations, people), including dates, will help you see what God is doing in your life. Review it regularly and update it when the prayers are answered. As an example, use your phone's note facility to help you record your prayers and answers.  I KNOW God hears me and has answered 100+ of my prayers because I have a record! Do you have one? Once you start maintaining one, your prayers will become bolder – because you will see the evidence of past prayers answered. Faith-filled prayers are prayers God loves, and HE WILL NOT DISAPPOINT YOU!

May God help you as you start praying the prayers our God loves – faith-filled, passionate prayers.
