Are you insane or just foolish or both

I recently spoke on the phone to a family member who was slightly drunk and he was shocked I was washing dishes as we spoke. He said he is "too proud" to do dishes. I told him, we do not have maids here in America: "who was I going to leave to do the dishes, my tired wife who works long hours whereas I work from home?"

It GOT worse - he is out of work so when I suggested that he volunteer to acquire the skills he needs to then eventually get a good job, he said I had "abused him."  He said, me I am humble but him, he is proud, he cannot do it, that is volunteer.

It got EVEN worse; he told me there is a lady who likes him and wants to marry him. The problem he told me is, he is broke and when she tells him things like: "take an Uber and come meet me here" he goes silent and backs away. I told him: "a genuine person will still like you." I then asked him why perhaps he could not just be honest and tell her he is "down on his luck" but with her help, he can rise again. Same issue rose he told me: "I can't, am too proud!"

IT *GOT EVEN "MORE" worse; He told me that another family member who still has no child with his wife should get a "side chick" so that at least he can have a child. I told him, what about the trauma it will cause the wife due to infidelity and that children born out of stable homes sometimes suffer emotionally. He could not see it that way, he saw that having a child (preferably a male) is so much more important than faithfulness and love and family!

I couldn't believe I was hearing this! Is this how the world thinks? Have I really become what the Lord Jesus said, "we are in the world but not of the world." (John 15: 18-19).

It reminded me of when I attended a motivational talk once. During that talk, the speaker said:

"If you keep doing the same thing, but expect things to change, THAT'S INSANITY."

He was speaking to sales agents and was trying to get them to try new strategies, get new education, surround themselves with new people, read new books etc if they were to change their lives.

Too many of us are stuck in the SAME old habits and then expect change!

Is that insanity or foolishness? I'm not sure...

The Bible however addresses this issue of changing your thought patterns...

To be continued...

  • Are you insane or just foolish or both
  • Being alert and sober
