Fearing your Heavenly Father

Introduction

When the Lord Jesus first started speaking to me, one of the things he helped me understand was just how important it was to fear God. He asked me to speak to his people in the global church about the fear of the Lord in the very first series of messages I ever preached.

Why did he do this? It is because many Christians today have missed the mark of Christ.

We miss the fact that Jesus told us in the Lord's prayer to call God "our Father," meaning we should come close to him in love, as many rightly preach. But the very next thing he said was to treat God as holy - "hallowed be your name." Hence, Jesus showed us that we should understand that our Father is a God of love but also "one to be feared," for he is holy.

Many Christians thus ignore scriptures, not just in the Old Testament, but also in the New Testament, which speaks of this fear of God in scriptures such as this:

"Work out your salvation with fear and trembling" Philippians 2: 12 (NLT) or this:

"Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off." Romans 11: 22 (NLT)

Before His return, the Lord has sent me ahead of Him, so I can warn you that some of your prophets are preaching to you about God's "love" and "grace" but have not prepared you for a Holy God - who should be feared. So let me help you to ensure you DO NOT MISS THE MARK OF CHRIST!

So, if you want to know someone's character, hearing from them is best. When Moses was DYING to know God better, he asked God to show him His glory. When God passed in front of Moses, he announced himself extremely unusually. Here is how He spoke of himself:

"The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness, maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. Yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generations." Exodus 34: 6 - 7 (NIV)

Do you notice both God's kindness and severity? Sure, he is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, and shows love to thousands of generations - hence, a GOD OF LOVE, but he is also to be feared because HE will "by no means leave the guilty unpunished." If you maintain this healthy balance of your Heavenly Father - fear and love, you won't miss the mark of Christ. Lord Jesus, come - Maranatha!
