The Connection Between a Great King and Self-Control

The Connection Between a Great King and Self-Control

By Pastor Dickson Wasake  ·  Senior Pastor, OurTestimony.org

The Bible makes a striking connection between kingship and self-control — in particular, controlling two very specific areas of life:

your sexual desires (chasing after the wrong people)

  your relationship with alcohol

Look at what Proverbs says:

"Don't give your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings. It is not for kings, Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes to say, 'Where is strong drink?' lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the justice due to anyone who is afflicted. Give strong drink to him who is ready to perish, and wine to the bitter in soul. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more."

— Proverbs 31:3–7 WEBUS

Did you see what the proverb is implying?

1.  A good king controls his desires. If you cannot control how you pursue the wrong people, you will lose your crown. History is littered with powerful men and women brought down by this very thing.

2.  Alcohol is for those who are struggling. A good king remains sober at all times. It is the broken and despairing who drink excessively to forget their pain.

Put another way — if you want to remain a king or a leader, perhaps put away the alcohol. Have you noticed how many of the wealthiest people and world leaders hardly drink? Look it up. The NVIDIA CEO, for example, drinks largely just tea.

These few verses alone can carry you far in your journey to success. Cut out these two things — unchecked sexual desire and excessive alcohol — and you will have dealt with two of the most potent forces that bring down kings.

May the Lord help you as you listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Maranatha!
