The Gift God Gave Me, I Give to You

The Gift God Gave Me, I Give to You

By Pastor Dickson Wasake  ·  Senior Pastor, OurTestimony.org

I receive many prayer requests from saints who want to learn how to pray to the Lord their God — the God of Heaven.

I was desperate a few years ago. I wanted to pray, but I did not know how. I do not think I could pray more than five minutes without falling asleep!

I cried to the Lord and asked him to help me. I heard the Lord speak that day. He said just one word: "Psalms!"

This has been my gift from the Lord ever since. The Psalms are the prayer book of the Bible — read them to learn how to pray, just like you read Proverbs to learn wisdom, or Ephesians to do spiritual battle. Different books serve different purposes.

Here is what I learned from the Psalms:

1.  Even in trouble, they worship. Learn to start your prayers with worship, even when you have a thousand problems.

2.  You can copy their exact words. For example:

"I love you, Yahweh, my strength. Yahweh is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower."

— Psalms 18:1–2 WEBUS

Use those exact words when you speak to God. Eventually he will give you words like them.

3.  Read them continually. I read Psalms and Proverbs daily, in addition to my normal Bible reading plan. This is what is sometimes called "praying the Bible" — you take a verse or two and those become your words back to God.

4.  Assign specific prayers to specific days. On Mondays, for example, I pray for people I want to be with me in Heaven. This means my prayers are not always just: "Oh God — food, job, marriage, children, no witchcraft, fire fire!" Different prayers for different days means variety, and it forces you to remember to pray for others.

I hope you will not miss our weekly prayer meetings. The Lord has started a very dangerous work, taking us through the importance of names in the Bible. You can start off cursed and end blessed.

If you have a prayer request, share it with me.

Be blessed. Lord Jesus, come — Maranatha!
