Reading the Bible (how to)

In addition to being a spiritual weapon to defeat devils as I showed in the previous message, reading the Bible is like dropping an atomic bomb on sin. It is virtually impossible to stay the same if you read the Bible because the Bible is the word of God and he declares this about his word:

"Is not My word like fire [that consumes all that cannot endure the test]?" says the Lord, "and like a hammer that breaks the [most stubborn] rock [in pieces]? Jeremiah 23: 29 (AMP).

In another place the Lord, who is the Spirit says this about the word:

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4: 12

Reading the Bible therefore brings radical change:  it removes sin and impurities (like fire); it breaks addictions (like a hammer); and it changes thought patterns (like a sword dividing old and new mindsets).

I read my Bible everyday as part of an annual reading plan such as this one. How do I approach my daily Bible reading?

  • I pray before I read. I ask the Holy Spirit to open my eyes to what I am reading.
  • I have a note pad because if the word is alive, then God is speaking and so I need to pay attention, by taking notes. I use the note pad on my phone so I have his words everywhere.
  • I read systematically. Meaning from Genesis to Revelation. Most people read say a "verse of the day" and say that is their bible reading. No, that is not how the Bible is meant to be read. You need to read it from beginning to end so you can get the "full counsel of God."
  • If I cannot read - I listen to an audio version, while driving, at the gym, having dinner etc. Most good bible apps these days have audio versions.

I have found that "miraculously" as I do my daily reading, God gives me the answers to what I need. Remember the Bible says it is alive - which means that you can trust that God who knew you from the beginning, knew you would experience what you are going through and he ordained his word to be there ready for you, just like our "daily bread" - a meal to sustain you during the day. But you will not understand everything in the Bible, especially in your early days. To assist you, you will need godly influences – which I will cover next time.

To be continued…
