Spiritual warfare (reading the Bible daily)

Ephesians 6 which describes the Armour of God which we need for spiritual warfare says in verse 17:

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Most Christians are powerless because they do not fight with the powerful weapons God has given us for pulling down strongholds. When faced with a test or temptation there is ONLY ONE weapon that can defeat Satan, that weapon is the word of God. Let me explain it.

In the last message, I shared that baptism symbolises that we die (when we go into water) and rise (when we come out of the water) with Christ. This means - our lives are wrapped up in Christ’s and this means spiritually that when Satan sees a Christian, he sees Christ – whom he HATES.

If our lives are wrapped in Christ's, what Satan did to Jesus, he will do to us. What did Satan do to Christ as soon as he was baptised? Satan tempted Christ.  Matthew 4: 3 - 11 shows this epic spiritual warfare taking place.

3 times he tempted Jesus - sending fiery darts to the Son of God.  How did the Christ respond? 3 times He raised a shield of Faith (in his God) to quench out the darts of the enemy AND THEN he stabbed back with the word of God.

He brought out the ONLY weapon in the armor – he quoted the word of God: "IT IS WRITTEN.."

The Lord Jesus did not call on angels to help, he did not even call on his father to help. He called on the word of God to help and said: "It is written" … "it is also written."  "Away from me, Satan! it is written."

Satan attacked Jesus early on in his public ministry just like he had tried to kill baby Jesus. This means Satan likes to destroy things in their early stages or infancy, before they become strong. So likewise, your spiritual battle will come early on in your journey and that is why you must very quickly develop the habit of reading your Bible so you can be prepared!

But how do you effectively read the Bible where many find it boring? I will cover that next time.

To be continued…
