The role of the church

As I stated in part 6, godly influences - men and women in the universal church (such as Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers) form part of the body of Christ and you should connect to these - for example through their books and online channels BUT in addition to that, you need to have a "local church" where you are a member for this plays a special role in a true disciple's growth. Why?

God has ordained "overseers" or "shepherds" to lead his people.  These "overseers" are typically pastors. How different is their role from the other godly influences?

If you follow godly influences, even if it is through online services - you are not known to them personally and so you are not accountable to anyone.

The Christian life in a Church however involves a pastor and the Bible gives instructions to disciples as follows:

Listen to your pastors, and do not resist them, for they watch for your souls as those that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief; for that is unprofitable for you. Hebrews 3: 17 (JUB).

According to the above verse, your pastors will need to give an "account" to Jesus on how they cared for you (as his sheep).  "Accounting to Christ for your soul" means you should submit to their authority.

But what exactly do these pastors do? The Lord explained that they do this (see John 21: 15 – 16):

  • Feed the lambs – meaning giving spiritual food to young/new believers.
  • Take care of the sheep – meaning supervise, protect the flock.
  • Feed the sheep – meaning giving spiritual food to old/mature believers.

A shepherd as you know has a very critical duty and so it is important that you make it easy for the pastor to watch over you. For example, don’t cause him grief by for example being difficult or not regularly turning up at Church (for your spiritual food). How can you grow if you never turn up?

Speaking of receiving spiritual food, where the Pastor will feed you in public – in church, you need to also do certain things in private – these are called your "devotionals" or "spiritual disciplines" and these I will cover next time.

To be continued…
