Disciplined devotional life

"Rabbi" "Master" "Teacher." If you read these words in the Bible, what comes to mind?

  • Regular class?
  • Discipline in class?
  • Lessons, with notes being kept?
  • A curriculum?

When Jesus walked this earth, his disciples used such titles to describe him - because that is what he was. They were in training. Training for what? Training for military service - spiritual warfare as well as training in holiness - for eternal life.

BUT who ever became a great soldier or a great athlete unless they disciplined themselves? This discipline means inconveniences, perhaps waking up early, but still you must train.

Then when Jesus left this earth, he said he would give us another helper like him - the Holy Spirit who would teach us ALL truth.

So just like Jesus was a master, the Spirit is teaching and so if the disciples were disciplined to learn from Jesus their teacher, we should be disciplined to learn from the Spirit.

So are you attending class regularly? This is where the idea of the discipline of daily spiritual devotions comes in. Daily devotionals mean you do them irrespective of moods and feelings for some days you will be tired, some discouraged, some sick, some busy, some hosting guests, some lazy. Some days you will be excited to read, some days you will be in the spirit.

You would go to class at almost all times except on rare occasions, right? It is the same with spiritual disciplines. So what are these disciplines?  They typically include the following:

  • Reading the Bible (daily) and meditating on it (day and night).
  • Praying (with for example different prayer points for different days).
  • Worshiping God in song and praise.
  • Giving regularly (e.g. to your Church, your godly influences and the poor and vulnerable).
  • Fasting (To develop self-control and humility).

If you do these things, learning how to do them through your Bible reading, as guided by your teacher the Holy Spirit and assisted by his Shepherds (such as Pastors) your progress will be evident and you will grow from a babe to a mature person and thus a true disciple.  May the Lord keep you!

Your brother in the Lord and a slave of the Lord Jesus.

D E Wasake.
