Part 2: Standing in the way that sinners take.

Holiness is a REALLY big thing. At this very moment there are for example 4 living creatures in heaven who never stop crying day and night:

“Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God almighty.” (Rev 4:8).

Big as this word is, the Lord Almighty himself has however said this to us human beings:

You shall be holy, just as I am holy”. (1 Peter 1:16).

This means everyone who has been saved or become born again, having been made in God’s image, we are called to live a life that is set apart- for that is what holiness means.

But how can you set yourself apart from this world? How can you be in this world and yet not be a part of it? (John 17: 15-16).

To help you see this, here is the beginning of Psalms 1:

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”

Psalms 1:1-2 NIV

Did you notice from the Psalm that there is a process for how someone becomes more unholy or rather becomes more and more comfortable with the world until they start mocking or blaspheming God just like Satan?

See what the Psalm shows:

1.       The person first WALKS in step with sinners;

2.       Then the person (getting more interested in the way of sin) STANDS in the same way as sinners;

3.       Then finally they are so comfortable they SIT in COMPANY with people who mock God.

Put another way, those who never mature into becoming holy as a daily practice, never learn to be comfortable with separating themselves from this evil world.

They never mature to know it is okay to be an “outcast” in this world and thus in an effort to please people, even while calling themselves “saved” they start off being in the same places, listening to the same songs or watching the same movies as the world and slowly by slowly they end up becoming like those of the world - making a joke about God, the Holy One who sits on a throne and reigns forever and ever!

One of the reasons I took so long to get saved was because I thought being saved was too “boring.”

I wanted to be liked by others - I wanted to be part of the “cool crowd” hence for example why I loved it when I became a professional DJ. I even had a name, “DJ Wickie Dickie!”

One of the first things the Lord told me to do when I got saved was to fast. This separation to him helped me to discipline my body, to develop self-control so I would not so easily give in to the past things I had enjoyed so much (lusts of the flesh).

So, the first practical application to starting to live a holy life is to start fasting to overcome the “lusts of the flesh.” (The things we often crave).

This will help you to set yourself apart from this world and thus give yourself to the Lord’s service. If you are serious about holiness and want to know more about fasting - that is why and how to fast, below is an article from our sister ministry, Shaweleroad. The Lord showed me to write it early on in my walk with him. It contains lessons which can help you learn why ALL Christians should fast. It is here:
