The morning AFTER receiving Jesus

What happened after I had my encounter with Jesus?

The moment one receives Jesus is often a moment of great excitement and when I first wrote these series, I ended them at the peak of the mountain – the moment of salvation but then after a moment of rest, I believe as guided by the Spirit, I realized I needed to prepare someone for what to do AFTER getting saved, because many Christians find salvation and then lose their way shortly after – meaning they BACKSLIDE. Sad as this is, this is however not unusual, for I was like this. In fact for over 20 years, before my encounter with Jesus, I was the KING OF BACKSLIDERS.

What do I mean by being the King of Backsliders? Do I mean Michael Jackson’s dance? Backsliding meant that so many times, until I finally held onto Jesus in 2017, I would hear a message about sin and salvation, I would get “saved” or repent of my sins but by the next weekend, I was back to my old habits – perhaps in the night club or drinking alcohol.

When I however encountered the Lord Jesus in 2017, I resolved never to backslide again (and he helped me hold on to him). What did I do different such that I can still testify to the Lord holding me 7 years later? There are a few critical things one needs to do, to fulfil all righteousness. Some of these things, which the Lord Jesus has taught me are this:

1.       Get baptized. Baptism is a public confession of a private decision. Publicly getting baptized is a form of making your testimony known to others. There is something about making your stance public that helps you endure, even when things get tough.  I got baptized on 28 May 2017, about 2 months after my radical encounter with Jesus.

2.       Find a daily Bible reading plan. Most people “backslide” because they don’t let the word of God take root in their life. If you have for example lived a life of sin for 20 years, to become saved requires a completely new pattern of thinking, of living and of relating to others. A new Christian is like a baby, they need a lot of milk. Many new Christians neglect to read their Bibles and so they fall away. In my case, I was blessed to find a Bible in one year plan and this allowed me to read the entire Bible. I now do this every year, and this has been the foundation on which I have built my life.  You should imitate me as I learnt from Christ.

3.       Find a church and Godly influences to supplement your Bible reading. As becoming a Christian is a completely different lifestyle, some old friends will hate you (and you will likely lose them). You will however likely also find completely new friends. Finding new “godly influencers” is critical for helping you to stay strong for we need a godly community around us because the Bible describes the Church as the “body of Christ” of which you are part. So, this means you should do a few new things:

a.       Find a physical church or online community near you to be part of.

b.       Buy books of spiritually mature Christians to help you understand the new faith. In my first year, I read two great books – by Rick Warren and by Nicky Gumbel. I then supplemented these with other great Chrisitan writers such as Smith Wigglesworth, Kenneth Hagin et al.

c.       Watch Christian TV/online ministry programs. I also often watch a number of Christian channels such as TBN, GOD TV and online ministries’ YouTube channels.

This content, in supplement to your daily Bible reading gives you a strong foundation.

4.       Develop the discipline of a dedicated time with God.  Many Christians backslide because they do not develop the discipline of spending time with God – in praise and worship, in prayer, in reading the Bible, in listening to God speak (through meditation).  I typically spend about 1 – 2 hours daily with the Lord but this started with less than 15 minutes a day and as time went, it got longer. Start where you can, even if it’s 5 minutes daily and build your spiritual muscle up.
