Putting your hand to the plow

When I completed the last message of the series "how to receive Jesus" I ended by saying that based on the guidance of the Lord, I needed to speak about "The morning AFTER receiving Jesus."

Why is it important that I speak to you about the morning(s) after? Many Christians receive the GOOD NEWS of salvation but the next day they go through the BAD NEWS of losing their way shortly after – meaning they BACKSLIDE.

Sad as this is, this is however not unusual, for I was like this. In fact, for over 20 years, before my encounter with Jesus, I was the KING OF BACKSLIDERS but thank God, he never wastes an opportunity. I spent 20 years backsliding, so that the Lord could send me ahead of you - to make sure you do not make the same mistakes I did. So, learn from me for free. My 20 years of mistakes, you can learn by investing 5 minutes of your time reading. Isn't God kind?

Now true discipleship, for a student who matures in Christ, their teacher and Master involves several steps in following Jesus which I will deal with in these POWERFUL series. Those steps are:

  • Someone who never looked back
  • Getting baptized.
  • Finding a daily Bible reading plan.
  • Finding godly influences (books, TV, pastors) to supplement your Bible readings.
  • Finding a church to grow in.
  • How to develop the discipline of dedicated set aside time with God.

So, when Jesus told someone to follow him, that person gave an excuse about wanting to go do something first but then the Bible says this:

"Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."" Luke 9:62 NIV

This verse is saying that a true disciple never looks back, the true disciple GOES FORWARD. But why should we not to look back? To help you understand, next time I will share an example of someone radically ensured they never looked back! Stay blessed.

To be continued…
