An example of a radical follower

In part 1 of these series, I highlighted that Jesus said that no one who starts ploughing and looks back is worth serving him. This seems pretty harsh from Jesus but what did he mean?

He meant that if you are going to be a true disciple, you must be really radical. Many people having become then experience "buyer's remorse" meaning they miss their old life: the parties, the alcohol, the sex, the swear words. They miss their old friends and places. Do not be like that.

Your past life was slavery to sin, it might have looked good, but the wages of sin is death. Learn from a good example, someone who followed God radically:

"He (Elisha) left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, "Please let me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you." And he (Elijah) said to him, "Go back again, for what have I done to you?" So he (Elisha) returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.  1 Kings 19:20-21

This is the story of the call of the young prophet Elisha after he was called by God to be the successor to Prophet Elijah. Elisha was so radical that so he could protect himself from being tempted to go back to his old lifestyle of being a farmer, instead of the Lord’s calling as a prophet, he did this:

  • He took the plow apart (these were wooden).
  • he then killed the oxen.
  • He sacrificed the oxen as a burnt offering to God; using the plows as an altar that burned completely to the Lord.

Is your faith in God so radical that you will destroy all alternatives and trust in him? Will you for example delete the phone number of an ex who remains a "side dish," How about moving to another location so you are not near a bar that lures you in? Or cancelling subscription to shows/channels that teach destructive habits. Which oxen will you offer to the Lord? Which plows (old paths) will you destroy?

Do you also realize that when Elisha burnt the oxen, he gave the meat to the people nearby - his family and friends? It looks like this was a farewell party where his people saw his public declaration of faith - perhaps like Baptism. We shall talk about that next time.

To be continued…

Your brother in the Lord and a slave of the Lord Jesus.
