The role of baptism in true discipleship.

Jesus started his work by getting baptized but interesting, he did not really need to get baptised because the one who baptised him, John the Baptist baptized people after they repented of their sins. But Jesus was sinless. So why did he need to get baptised?

He explained it to John this way; "to fulfil all righteousness (Matthew 3: 15)."   So likewise, when someone gets saved, it is not baptism that brings about their salvation. Salvation comes simply by confessing your sins and believing that Jesus is the Lord (Romans 10: 9), BUT getting baptized fulfils all righteousness.

Baptism is a public declaration of a private commitment, just like a wedding celebration is a public declaration of an inner commitment a couple make to one another.  Imagine I told my wife I loved her – but did not want to have a public wedding (assuming I had all the money). Wouldn’t my bride wonder what kind of love it was that could not be displayed publicly?

Since a true disciple wants to please his "commanding officer " in all ways (2 Timothy 2: 4) - just like a husband wants to please his wife, so baptism is an act of love to your Lord who gave his life for you.

Baptism also sets a pattern of obedience. If you will obey the Lord in something "small" like baptism - after all he said: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28: 19)" then you will also obey him in something big – like raising the dead.

Have you been baptised?  Have you died (when you go into the water) and risen (when you come out of the water) with the Lord Jesus?  (See Romans 6: 3-4).

Meanwhile I must WARN YOU.

After your Baptism, you will likely face a test, just like after Jesus got baptized, he was led by the Spirit to face a test.

For that test, you need the sword of God. I will cover that next time.

To be continued…

Your brother in the Lord and a slave of the Lord Jesus.
